SEADAE Member Course Code Revision Work Comes to Fruition

 SEADAE members celebrate the newly revised arts course codes included in NCES release.
 

           March marks the publication of revised school course codes including revisions to arts courses as drafted by the SEADAE data committee.  In 2009 and 2010, SEADAE Members Nancy Carr, then of California, Jay Tucker, Maryland, Phil Shepherd, Kentucky, Joyce Huser, Kansas, Jack Mitchell, California, Deb Hansen, Delaware, Scott Shuler, Connecticut and Richard Baker, then of Louisiana, joined partners Bob Morrison of Quadrant Data, Jim Palmarini from the Educational Theatre Association, Jane Bonbright from the National Dance Education Organization and Bob Sabol of the National Art Education Association in drafting new course descriptions.  Version 2.0 of the School Codes for the Exchange of Data (SCED) was released the week of March 17th.  SCED is a voluntary, common classification system for prior-to-secondary and secondary school courses. The newly revised course codes may be accessed, along with additional elements and attributes that provide context for the codes at http://nces.ed.gov/forum/SCED.asp.

 SCED Version 2.0 includes:

    new and updated course codes, titles, and descriptions in Subject Area 5: Fine and Performing Arts, renamed to Visual and Performing Arts;
    new and updated course codes, titles, and descriptions for Career and Technical Education (
CTE) courses in multiple Course Subject Areas;
    new and updated Advanced Placement (AP) courses in multiple Course Subject Areas;
    new course attributes that are not part of the SCED Framework, but can be used to provide expanded course information; and
    new Course Subject Area codes for prior-to-secondary courses that match secondary Course Subject Area codes.
