Kansas Department of Education Installs Student Artwork in their Boardroom

Student Artwork Reminds Kansas Department of Educaiton to put students first

SEADAE Member Joyce Huser, Kansas, facilitated the unveiling of an installation of student artwork at the Kansas State Department of Education.

The Department of Education recently acquired the mural for their board room from Wichita, Kansas school district elementary students.  This project was funded by a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant.  Wichita was awarded the 21st Century grant to operate an after-school fine arts program at 10 schools:  Allen, Caldwell, Cessna, Gardiner, Linwood, Stanley, Gordon Parks, Jardine, Curtis and Mead.  Last year, they served 1,275 at-risk students in the after-school program and an additional 175 homeless students over the summer.  They were recently awarded supplemental funds to continue the summer camp which will serve homeless youth housed in shelters for the entire summer.

The mural was unveiled Monday, November 9th.  30 students attending the board meeting to sing and speak about their art work.
